Chlamydia is one of the most common Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), however, often has no symptoms. It is very easy to treat but if left undetected it can cause serious health problems. Here’s the low down on chlamydia, and how you can protect yourself.
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted, and most often occurs on the genitals. It’s one of the most common STIs both in Germany and the world.
How is chlamydia spread?
Mostly through unprotected vaginal or anal sex, but it can be spread through unprotected oral sex too. Yep!
What’s the worst that can happen?
Well, it’s not great. If left undetected, chlamydia can lead to infections of the womb, testicles or prostate and lead to infertility.
Are there any symptoms?
Most infections don’t show any symptoms, which is why testing is the only way to find out for sure if you have chlamydia or not.
But here are some possible symptoms of Chlamydia infection:
Painful urination
Vaginal discharge
Discharge from the penis
Painful sexual intercourse
Bleeding between periods and after sex in people with female genitals
Testicular pain
If you do get symptoms, they usually appear between 1 and 3 weeks after having unprotected sex.
What’s the good news?
Chlamydia can be cured easily with antibiotics, especially if it’s caught early.
