What is Hepatitis C?
It’s an infection of the liver caused by the HCV virus.
How is Hepatitis C spread?
HCV which leads to “Hep C” is transferred by blood, which happens most commonly during drug use, but can also occur during sex.
What’s the worst that can happen?
If not treated the infection typically becomes chronic and can lead to liver infections and liver cirrhosis. Not great.
Are there any symptoms?
Symptoms are rare, especially in the early stages, but once the infection is chronic it could show up as tiredness or stomach issues. Signs and symptoms can include:
Bleeding easily
Bruising easily
Fatigue
Poor appetite
Yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Dark-colored urine
Itchy skin
Swelling in your legs
Weight loss
What’s the good news?
An HVC infection can be cured in 95% of cases. The treatment is relatively easygoing and usually takes 3 months.
